UNDOING RUIN

PUBLICATIONS

Undoing Ruin is a comprehensive publication project set within a richly developed dystopian sci-fi world, designed to immerse tabletop RPG players in a universe that is both grim and visually striking. As the lead designer, the focus was on creating a seamless, user-friendly layout that balanced aesthetic impact with functional clarity across both print and digital formats.

The visual system embraces a futuristic yet decayed design language, incorporating distressed textures, bold typographic systems, and a clear information hierarchy to support readability, navigation, and gameplay flow.

Beyond the core publication, the project expanded into supplementary print materials and a digital starter guide, providing an accessible entry point for new players. A dedicated website is currently in development to house expanded lore, gameplay mechanics, and exclusive content, extending the experience beyond the page and reaching sci-fi enthusiasts and tabletop gamers alike.

Together, this multi-platform ecosystem positions Undoing Ruin as more than a rulebook—transforming it into a fully immersive narrative and gameplay experience.

A richly detailed dystopian sci-fi world designed to immerse tabletop RPG players in a grim, visually captivating universe.

Prototype pages for client review before laying out master pages for drafting the guidebook's layouts.

Layout & System Exploration:

This mockup presents a series of prototype layouts developed for the Undoing Ruin guidebook. Working closely with the client, I collaborated on selecting a typographic system that reflected the tone, genre, and intent of the content while maintaining strong readability across varied sections.

Together, we explored and refined page structures and table systems tailored to the book’s thematic divisions, ensuring visual consistency, hierarchy, and clarity throughout the publication.

Special attention was given to the integration of imagery within long-form text, using intentional placement, scale, and spacing to establish visual rhythm, support narrative flow, and sustain reader engagement across dense informational spreads.

CHALLENGES:

  • Developing a typographic system that aligned with the client’s vision—blending dystopian sci-fi and cyberpunk influences—while maintaining high readability and hierarchy across long-form content.

  • Adapting the layout system to work effectively across print and digital formats, ensuring the physical book retained its visual impact while the digital version supported clear, intuitive on-screen navigation.

  • Designing data-dense tables that balanced visual interest and usability, presenting critical gameplay information clearly without feeling cluttered or overwhelming.

GOALS & METRICS:

  • Collaborate closely with the client and multidisciplinary team—including writers, editors, designers, and playtesters—to ensure every design decision enhanced the player experience without introducing unnecessary cognitive load.

  • Create a format-agnostic publication, allowing players to move seamlessly between print and digital versions without sacrificing clarity, usability, or visual consistency.

  • Develop an interactive starter guide to support onboarding for new players, using gameplay examples, character sheets, and campaign scenarios to increase engagement and immersion.

  • Deliver a visually compelling yet highly functional system that balanced readability, aesthetics, and ease of navigation, ensuring the book functioned as both a reference tool and an immersive world-building resource.
